Five people were arrested in two separate incidents, leading to police seizing more than 300 grammes of heroin and nearly Rs 7 lakh in cash plus other items in Lower Mawprem here yesterday.
The two operations were carried out by the anti-narcotics taskforce of the state police and officers of Lumdiengjri police station.
In the first, one person was apprehended near the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) office. He was found to be carrying 66.46g of heroin, two mobile phones and a Hyundai Eon car.
The same evening, credible inputs were received and police launched a raid wherein four persons were apprehended. They were in possession of a much larger haul of drugs and drug-related paraphernalia. This included 20 boxes and 20 vials containing 268.71g of heroin, Rs 6,87,150 in cash, 25 empty vials and 60 syringes.
Relevant police cases have been registered and further investigations are underway, Superintendent of Police MGR Kumar said in a press release today.
