The Border Security Force (BSF) Meghalaya seized upwards of 10 tonnes of sugar before smugglers could transport it over the international border into Bangladesh.
In two operations carried out yesterday, the BSF also arrested five suspected smugglers.
Personnel of the BSF’s 193rd Battalion identified three suspicious vehicles approaching the border in East Khasi Hills. The force had previously received specific intelligence and was on alert in the area.
The vehicles were loaded with a consignment of sugar and four suspects were interrogated. As they were unable to provide satisfactory answers and failed to produce valid documentation, the BSF detained them and handed them over to the Dangar police station for further legal action.
In the other case, personnel of the BSF’s 172nd Battalion intercepted a vehicle near Sonapur while on its way to the international border in East Jaintia Hills. Here, too, the driver was unable to produce valid documentation and he and the sugar were seized and handed over to Umkiang police station for further action.
