Four persons with a huge quantity of explosives were arrested by police from Jalaphet Bri-Sumer village in East Jaiñtia Hills district, police said today.
The arrest was made last night during a joint raid launched after police received information that some persons were spotted roaming suspiciously in the jungle areas of the village carrying cartons.
“With a strong suspicion that the materials might be of items which may put a threat to the peaceful conduct of the elections, a joint raid was conducted,” East Jaiñtia Hills Superintendent of Police, Jagpal Singh Dhanoa said.
The team led by Additional SP Banraplang Jyrwa and police teams from Umpleng AD and Saipung PS during the raid spotted a cowshed and four persons were sleeping inside.
During the raid, the team recovered 26 cartons with 650 kilos of gelatine sticks, four carton boxes with 200 electronic detonators and four mobile phones.
The arrested persons are Point Chyrmang (30), Nikalai Chyrmang (21), Shanbor Chyrmang (22) all of Jalaphet Bri-Sumer, Urchuni village and Mij Chyrmang (22) of Jalaphet Bri-Sumer, 7-Kilo.
The SP said a case has been registered at Saipung PS and investigation is on to trace the backward and forward linkages.
