Troops of the BSF Meghalaya frontier seized 300 kilos of human hair meant to be smuggled to Bangladesh from international border of South West Khasi Hills district.
The human hair worth Rs 30 lakh was transported from Shillong to bordering Jamador village yesterday to be smuggled to Bangladesh, BSF official said, adding it was handed over to the custom in Balat.
Earlier Myanmar was used as a transit country and now Bangladesh has emerged as a new transit hub for human hair recently, the official said, adding, that they are further shipped to China and Taiwan.
“These human hairs are used in making wigs which have huge international demand and the BSF were able to seized 225 kg from the international border of Bangladesh last year,” the official added.
