BJP MLA Sanbor Shullai today claimed that 30 per cent of his supporters stayed away from voting during the Lok Sabha elections because his name and the party symbol was nowhere to be found.
The BJP has decided not to field any candidates for the Lok Sabha polls in Meghalaya held on April 19. The saffron party has however decided to support the NPP which is an ally of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
“In South Shillong 30 per cent diehard BJP voters did not cast their votes out of anger. These included people from all sections of society,” Shullai told reporters today.
“Our volunteers said that people went to push the button but since my name was not there and my symbol was not there, they went to the presiding officer and asked where is the name of Sanbor and where is the Lotus (symbol) of Narendra Modi and they ran away and did not cast their votes,” he claimed.
South Shillong recorded the lowest voter turnout with only 58.36 per cent.
Shullai however exuded confidence that the BJP will win from South Shillong constituency stating, “Despite the fact that my name was not there and my symbol was not there but still we are winning in my constituency. Sanbor and BJP are winning in South Shillong,” he said.
