Three pigs at a cooperative society died today of an unknown illness, taking the death toll at this single cooperative society in Ri-Bhoi to 13.
Around two weeks ago, 10 pigs died of a mysterious illness at Nangku Chaphrang Multipurpose Cooperative Society in Saiden village, Ri-Bhoi, raising fears among neighbouring pig farmers.
In all cases, the animals had a fever and sudden loss of appetite.
Since the first spate of cases, the society has kept the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department in the loop. Department officials conducted autopsies on the first 10 animals but the society has not been provided with the results.
