There are six pending cases against sitting and former MLAs of Meghalaya in various courts in the State.
This was as per the status report dated September 17 filed before the Meghalaya High Court bench of Acting Chief Justice Hamarsan Singh Thangkhiew.
“As per the report as on date, there are six cases pending, one having been disposed of on August 19, 2024,” Justice Thangkhiew said. He also directed for listing this matter on November 28 for the next status report.
Earlier, as per the website of the Meghalaya High Court, two sitting MLAs and four former MLAs have cases pending against them in various courts.
The sitting MLAs are Ampareen Lyngdoh and Sanjay A. Sangma (both of NPP). While Lyngdoh’s case is pending before the Special CBI Court, the case against Sangma is pending in the Court of Special Judge, Tura.
Among the former MLAs, the case against Bindo M. Lanong is pending before the Court of Judicial Magistrate First Class while the case against Deborah C. Marak is pending before the Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate Shillong.
Further, the case against Mohendro Rapsang is pending before the Court of Judicial Magistrate First Class while the case against Julius K. Dorphang is pending before the Court of Special Judge POCSO, Jowai.
The Meghalaya High Court has created a special bench to monitor the progress of cases against former and sitting MPs and MLAs pending in various courts in the State
The creation of the special bench followed the direction by the Supreme Court on November 9, 2023 to all high courts in the country asking them to monitor the speedy disposal of pending criminal cases against former and sitting MPs and MLAs.
