Two more leaders of the Federation of Khasi, Jaiñtia and Garo People have been summoned by police to appear at Sadar police station on November 10 in connection with the October 28 rally organised by the FKJGP that was marred by several violent incidents.
The two pressure group leaders are the vice-president and chief organising secretary, Kitboklang Nongphlang and Khrawkupar Nongsiej.
Tension is brewing in the city and its outskirts after the violence that erupted during the October 28 rally organised by the FKJGP and the subsequent protests organised by several groups.
On October 30, the administration of the East Khasi Hills District promulgated prohibitory orders in the city and adjoining areas, banning all kinds of gatherings and rallies, except religious processions.
However, on November 1, the Save Hynñiewtrep Mission (SHM), a conglomerate of NGOs, organised a rally in Shillong in violation of Section 144 CrPC. The rally was attended by hundreds of people. Later, SHM leaders met Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong and demanded implementation of their nine-point demand, including the imposition of Inner Line Permit in the State.
The sequence of events was followed by the arrest of four persons involved in physical assaults and vandalism during the FKJGP rally. At least two of the arrested were FKJGP members.
