Two First Information Reports (FIRs) have been filed in Mairang police station in connection with the mob lynching case that took place at Umthlong village under Eastern West Khasi Hills on May 3.
According to police, on the fateful day at around 5:30 pm, two men were lynched by a mob numbering around 1500. The two men were lynched for allegedly trying to rape a 17 year old girl.
The deceased were identified as Melar Kurbah (36) of Demthring village in East Khasi Hills and Harmendra Kharkylliang (50) from Shyrwang village in Eastern West Khasi Hills.
Police also said that the Sordar of Umthlong village got to know of this incident at around 1:30 pm but informed the police only at 4:05 pm.
Police said that the officer in charge of Mairang police station had received a telephonic information at around 4:05 pm on May 3 from the Sordar of Umthlong village that two unknown persons were being held by the village durbar on the ground that they tried to rape a 17 year old girl at her residence.
“Thereafter they were caught and brought to the community hall by people of that village at around 1:30 pm or so, however when the magistrate and police arrived at the village at around 4:55 pm or so, the crowd that were gathered there didn’t allow the magistrate and police to take the unknown persons into their custody,” police said.
Further, police said that while the magistrate was negotiating with some members of the crowd to allow the police to take the two in their custody of accused persons, then all of sudden the remaining members of public rushed towards the community hall and broke open the door and lynched the two persons.
Thereafter, the mob dispersed from that place. The magistrate immediately called for an ambulance and the two injured persons were taken to Tirot Sing Civil Hospital, Mairang.
On arrival at the hospital at around 7 pm, one of the injured, Melar Kurbah, was declared brought dead and the other, Hasmendra Kharkylliang was referred to Shillong Civil Hospital where he was declared brought dead.
“In this regard two FIRs were received in Mairang police station and accordingly two cases have been registered one is Mairang PS C/No 24(05)2024 under Section 376D/324 IPC, and the other one is Mairang PS C/No 25(05)2024 under Section 120B/302/34 IPC,” police said.
