Two suspected members of a gang of robbers were apprehended by police in Ri-Bhoi near Ranibari village today.
Reports were received in the morning regarding the sighting of armed miscreants in the jungle near the village prompting police at the local border outpost to mobilise.
As they ventured into the jungle, the miscreants opened fire on the police party. Despite the threat, the police refrained from retaliatory measures due to the presence of children and women nearby, opting instead to pursue the assailants.
In the ensuing operation, two individuals, identified as Ajit Rabha and Kavita Rabha (both 18) were apprehended.
Preliminary interrogation revealed their involvement in a criminal gang specialising in theft, including the illegal felling of sal trees, theft of bikes and betel nuts. The gang leader has been identified as Rudra Rabha, who is Ajit’s stepfather.
In addition, a country-made muzzle-loading firearm and gunpowder were seized during a search of Ajit’s residence. Police are currently conducting extensive combing operations in the area to locate the remaining miscreants.
A case has been registered at Khanapara police station under relevant sections of the law in connection with this incident.
Meanwhile, Director General of Police Lajja Ram Bishnoi lauded the Ri Bhoi police and said it was a commendable feat. “Despite facing gunfire from the criminals during the pursuit, our search team displayed remarkable courage and composure, leading to their capture,” he added.
