Around 150 luxury cottages will be constructed in Sohra and Umiam for accommodating high end tourists in the two popular destinations.
In Sohra, 50 cottages will be constructed at a 10 acre plot of land belonging to the Tourism Department. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 17 crore.
Similarly, in Umiam, 100 cottages will be built at a 15 acre land belonging to the department at an estimated cost of Rs 35 crore.
The cottages that will be set up in both Sohra and Umiam include Presidential Luxury Swiss Cottages, Royal Luxury Swiss Cottages and Premium Swiss Cottage Cottages.
The two projects will be built under the Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer (DBFOT) Mode on Public Private Partnership at the Project Site for a lease period of 20 years as per the terms and conditions stipulated in the Lease cum Development Agreement.
The luxury cottage accommodations would have multiple recreational activities for tourists staying at the cottages.
Activities that will be hosted within the project area would include luxury accommodation (for minimum cottages as per package requirement) with attached bath and toilet facilities, reception/ foyer area, restaurant, dining area and bar facilities, recreational activities like indoor games, outdoor games, event center, spa, yoga and ayurvedic therapies, library and cultural center, conference hall and VIP lounge area.
Meghalaya witnessed a total tourist footfall of 13,91,647 in 2023 reflecting a CAGR of 6.9 per cent between 2015 to 2023. As per the MTDC’s data, the foreign tourist footfall in Meghalaya stood at around 19,973 and domestic tourist footfall stood at around 1,37,674 respectively in 2023.
