Shillong, Sep 14: A 15-kg ovarian tumour was successfully removed at Williamnagar Civil Hospital on September 8, marking the first such major surgery performed under epidural anaesthesia at the hospital, officials said.
The 45-year-old patient had suffered progressive abdominal distension and pain for five years. The case was complicated by a pre-existing cardiac condition, making surgery and anaesthesia high-risk.
The surgery was led by Senior Gynaecologist Dr Vince Momin, with anaesthesia managed by Dr Sengrak Marak, whose expertise in epidural anaesthesia and high-risk cases was crucial.
The team was supported by staff nurses Eulin, Eugine and Dinea, OT technician Trinchi and Medicine Specialist Dr Tanmoy Momin who handled perioperative, post-operative and ICU care.
The patient is stable and recovering under close supervision, the department said.
The success highlights that complex, high-risk procedures can now be safely performed at government facilities closer to home, sparing patients referral outside the district, it said.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has congratulated the hospital for successfully performing a first-of-its-kind surgery.
