The Meghalaya State Commission for Women (MSCW) today condemned the “heinous” gangrape of two minor girls in South West Garo Hills last week.
“Such abhorrent behaviour has no place in our society and is a grave violation of human rights,” a statement from the commission said. “We stand in solidarity with the victims and their families during this difficult time.”
The MSCW called for swift investigation by the police, justice for the victims and “stronger measures” to prevent such crimes being committed in future.
A gang had raped two girls in separate incidents at the same site and on the same evening of April 16 (often reported as April 17) in Gandhipara during a local mela. Two boys who had accompanied the girls were also assaulted by the gang.
“We must unite to combat all forms of violence against women and girls and ensure their safety and well-being. We will not tolerate such acts and remain committed to creating a society where everyone can live without fear of harm of discrimination,” the MSCW added.
