The Meghalaya State Commission for Women (MSCW) today “strongly condemned” the incident of alleged harassment of a Christian nun from Garo Hills while she was travelling through Assam by bus.
Sister Rosemary, who serves in St John’s parish in Siju, was travelling from Dudhnoi to Goalpara in Assam when she was harassed by the bus conductor and some of the passengers, who made derogatory remarks against her, the habit she was wearing and her faith. She was turned out of the bus and had to find alternative transport to her destination.
“Such incidents can cause serious implication to the victim both as a woman and as a religious person,” the office of the MSCW said in an emailed press release. “Hence the Commission urges the government of Meghalaya and government of Assam to coordinate with each other and ensure that the perpetrators are found and brought to justice.”
It added that religious tolerance and respect should be maintained between the peoples of both states.
