The District Magistrate of West Khasi Hills has prohibited the catching of fish by use of poison in the rivers of Wahblei and Khusang, under Mawshynrut block.
The order has been made out under Section 144 of the CrPC and was necessitated after it was found that “unscrupulous persons/groups” are in the habit of using poison to catch fish in the area or through explosives.
These practices have “badly affected maritime life, the safety of water and the ecological balance in rivers and streams,” the magistrate said, adding that the order prohibits any person, organisation, clan or group of people from using poison to catch fish in the aforementioned rivers.
