Meghalaya Congress leader Manuel Badwar has opined that the Voice of the People Party (VPP), with its absolute majority in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), can bring about real positive change for the people.
In a recent conversation with Highland Post, Badwar said that a single party at the helm of affairs can lead to smooth functioning of the KHADC and the ability to tackle issues effectively without having to compromise due to coalition politics.
The VPP won 17 seats at this year’s KHADC election, a clear majority in the 29-member house. Badwar’s Congress Party was wiped out in the polls as the public gave the VPP a decisive mandate.
Badwar stressed the need for the new executive committee (EC) to investigate and address revenue leakage from toll and check gates, etc and redirect these funds towards district council development and upliftment of the Khasi community
He highlighted the district council’s potential role in enhancing primary education, urging the EC to explore innovative solutions. He also emphasised the need to protect farmers from exploitation by middlemen, ensuring fair prices and benefits for their hard work.
Badwar said that the VPP-led EC should seize this opportunity to make a positive impact.
“They have to pave the way for the youth… It can be done… whether it is the district council tying up with different financial institutions, by coming up with subsidised loans, access to detailed project reports and training sessions to ease our young entrepreneurs,” he said.
