The National People’s Youth Front, the youth wing of the National People’s Party, has defended Chief Minister and party president Conrad Sangma and attacked leader of the opposition and former CM Dr Mukul Sangma over the latter’s stance on the border agreement with Assam.
Yesterday, Dr Sangma called Conrad a puppet of the Assam government for agreeing to cede villages whose residents want to be with Meghalaya to the neighbouring state in the first phase of the border settlement.
Today, the NPYF president, Kitborlang Nongrem, said that Mukul is only interested in the border now that he has lost the CM’s chair. “It is very unfortunate that our former Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma is a person who says ‘No’ to everything, whether it is the ILP (Inner Line Permit) or the boundary settlement, and failed to produce any result on these issues when he was in power,” Nongrem said.
He lauded Conrad for the effort to settle the border dispute and said that the Congress, of which Mukul (who is now with the Trinamool Congress) led, could have resolved the dispute when it was in power in Meghalaya, Assam and the Centre.
“Conrad Sangma was able not only to convince the CM of Assam but also Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the boundary settlement and we hope that the other six areas of differences are settled at the earliest,” Nongrem added.
