The West Karbi Anglong district administration has assured the dorbar shnong of Khanduli to remove the tax check gate set up by the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC).

The assurance was made after the dorbar held a protest rally today which began from Khanduli football ground. An inspection of the check gate was conducted following the rally, which was attended by members of the dorbar, magistrates, police and leaders of the pressure groups.

West Karbi Anglong Deputy Commissioner, Krishna Baruah, West Jaiñtia Hills district magistrates, Wankhraw Kupar Kharbuli Silvester Phanbuh, police officers were present during the inspection.

Baruah interacted with the members of the dorbar and leaders of the pressure groups and assured that the check gate will be removed including deployment of Assam police from Khanduli.

Earlier, at the public meeting decided to ban all kinds of business activities between the Pnars and Karbis.

Waheh chnong of Khanduli, Yooshida Nongspung said that once the check gate is removed trade between the two communities will resume.

Villagers from Khanduli, Namdong and Saitsama, members of the Khasi Students Union, Federation of Khasi Jaiñtia and Garo People, East Jaiñtia National Council, Jaiñtia Students Movement, Hynñiewtrep Achik National Movement, Hynñiewtrep Youth Council and the Border Dispute Redressal Forum attended the public rally.

It may be mentioned that tension prevailed in Khanduli situated along the Meghalaya-Assam border after villagers uprooted the tax gate erected by the forest department of the KAAC.

To defuse the tension, the district administrations of both the state held a meeting last week wherein it was decided that both will ensure peace along the disputed area but the matter related to resolving the border dispute will be taken up by their regional committees constituted by both states.
