The Hynñiewtrep Border Dispute Redressal Forum (HBDRF) has pinned blamed on the State government stating that its weakness has emboldened Assam to violate the status quo along the inter-state border.
Reacting to the inauguration of a stadium at Umlaper village, Block II in Ri Bhoi District, which is one of the areas of difference between both the States the forum said the Meghalaya government should seek closure of the stadium till the border dispute between the two states is settled.
The forum in a statement here reminded installation of two police outposts in Khanduli (Lumpyrdi) in 1994-95. Mokoiram in 2020 and another at Saba this year despite protests by residents in those areas and said setting up of police outposts have emboldened Assam to further encroach inside the disputed villages. It also recollected incidences of assault particularly the assault on three Khasi youth at Umlaper and the subsequent destruction of the police checkgate there.
“All these incidents clearly show that the Assam government have failed to respect the status quo when both the states are in the process to find a long term solution,” spokesperson of the forum, Thomas Passah said.
Urging the State government to immediately take necessary action in the matter and praised Mawhati MDC, Charles Marngar for voicing against the inauguration of the stadium.
It may be noted that, a stadium was inaugurated at Umlaper by Horensing Bey, MP of Karbi Anglong, Assam on Thursday in the presence of Boithalangso MLA Rupsing Teron and EM KAAC Pardeep Rongpi, to the general consternation of the people of Ri-Bhoi.
