The War Jaintia Students’ Union (WJSU) yesterday deliberated on the issue of mining activities and, after thorough discussion, resolved to oppose the mining of major minerals in the War Jaintia region.
The WJSU noted that even the mining of minor minerals has “caused considerable environmental degradation” but, despite these adverse impacts, the union is not opposed to this because such activities “generate employment opportunities, both directly and indirectly to our local people.”
However, the WJSU remains implacably opposed to the mining of major minerals; it has learnt that certain stakeholders are seeking major mining licences from the government, it claimed in a press release today.
“The union stands firm in its commitment to safeguard the environment, protect the interest of the local people and ensure the sustainable development of the War Jaintia region,” the WJSU concluded.
