The Voice of the People Party’s (VPP) has selected a 10-member Executive Committee (EC), keeping with its election promise to the people that it will avoid wasteful expenditure.
The VPP said the EC in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council will comprise the chairman, vice-chairman and eight executive members.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting held at the party office in Nongkrem, VPP president Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit said, “We have gone to the people against wasteful expenditure of public funds. Therefore this is in line with the people’s expectations.”
He informed that Shemborlang Rynjah, newly elected MDC of Lyngkyrdem-Laitkroh will be the new Chief Executive Member of the KHADC.
The party has put up Strong Pillar Kharjana (Mawkhar-Pynthorumkhrah) to be the new Chairman and Kynjohlang Rangtong of Mawhati constituency as the Vice-Chairman.
The executive members will have two women in Deity Majaw (Laitumkhrah-Malki) and Aibandaplin Lyngdoh Nonglait (Mylliem). The others are Powell Sohkhlet (Pariong-Mawthadraishan), Seiborlang Warbah (Mawkynrew), Pynkhrawboklin Kharjahrin (Mawkyrwat), Winston Tony Lyngdoh (Nongthymmai) and Isynei Hinge (Umroi).
Basaiawmoit said the new Executive Committee will chalk a path on how to restructure the district council even if it has to take a hard decision against those misusing power or money of the council.
Contesting its first district council elections, the VPP winners are all primarily made up of those who had never before run for elected office. Despite this inexperience, the public awarded the upstart party a whopping mandate, giving it 17 seats out of the 29.
In the JHADC, Basaiawmoit said that the party, which won eight seats, will sit in the opposition. “The party will not form the Executive Committee (in JHADC) and we will sit in the opposition,” the VPP president added.
Meanwhile, the newly elected members of the Khasi and Jaintia Hills district councils will take oath tomorrow.
Following this, the election of chairpersons in both the councils and the Chief Executive Members will be held on February 28 to pave way for the constitution of the new houses.
The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) will be led by the Voice of the People Party while a coalition led by the National People Party will rule the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC).
The Deputy Commissioners of East Khasi Hills and West Jaintia Hills districts, Shillong, has been tasked with administering the oath of office to the new members in KHADC and JHADC respectively, and overseeing the election of the chairman.
The election of the Chief Executive Member will be presided over by the newly elected Chairman.
