The Voice of the People Party (VPP) held a massive rally in Smit, to celebrate their candidate’s victory in the recent elections.
The victory rally, marked by jubilant celebrations, echoed with music as party workers and the victorious candidate, Ricky Andrew J Synkon expressed excitement and energy following their electoral success.
The rally was attended by thousands of supporters of the VPP.
Breaking all records in the history of Shillong parliamentary seat, political novice Syngkon, defeated sitting MP, Vincent Pala of the Congress by a thumping margin of 3.7 lakh votes.
The VPP, a new entrant in the State political arena, has charted a meteoric rise since its birth before the 2023 Assembly elections when it won four seats.
Speaking at the rally, VPP president Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit said that the supporters are united to fight against corruption, poverty and other issues.
“We are united and we are not here to wage a war against other communities,” the VPP chief said.
Basaiawmoit also slammed claims that the VPP was riding on a populist wave and that it would not last. He said the emergence of the VPP is because other parties in the state have failed and could not serve the people as expected. “VPP is here to stay” he maintained.
He said the victory of Syngkon shows the maturity of the electorates and he will shoulder the responsibility to take up issues of the state to the Parliament.
Basaiawmoit also took a dig at the state government for extending the term of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council.
He stated that the government extended the term of the district council with the belief that the wave in favour of the VPP will subside in the MP election. “But with the victory of Syngkon, things have taken a new turn,” he claimed.
“Now they are confused. Everywhere they see is the VPP winning. We don’t know if the government plans to hold the MDC elections anytime soon,” Basaiawmoit added.
