Khliehriat, Mar 3: A violent confrontation over a land dispute triggered intense tension in Lama and Lakadong Ummat villages, in East Jaintia Hills district, leaving three people injured.
According to officials, the clash broke out between two groups from Lama and Lakadong Ummat during a joint measurement survey fixed today for the proposed alignment for the Green Field High Speed Corridor.
District Magistrate Manish Kumar said the groups attacked each other with fire arms, lathis, daos, ammunitions, explosive substances.
A police team reached the scene and brought the situation under control.
Superintendent of Police Pankaj Rasgania confirmed that a case filed by waheh shnong of Lama, Dawan-oo Rymbai has been registered at Khliehriat Police Station for rioting, attempt to murder and under Arms Act.
The injured persons are Biron Amrynsong, Argen Rupsi and Cheerful Suchen, all from Lama village.
Meanwhile, waheh shnong of Lakadong Ummat, Rimi Amkhloo stated that the clash broke out after villagers learnt that some people from Lama village sold the areca nut plantation to one Rock Dhar. He claimed that the plantation falls under Lakadong Ummat.
Apprehensive that the situation might escalate, the District Magistrate has imposed Section 163 of BNS.
“There is credible information that such unlawful activities are likely to persist and may escalate into serious law and order problems within the two villages,” the District Magistrate said.
