Villagers disgruntled that their Jal Jeevan Mission water connections are non-functional despite being marked as completed by the state government have resolved to turn the water tank into a holding pen for raising pigs.
In a slap in the face for Public Health Engineering Minister Marcuise Marak, under whose constituency the village of Akel Agalgre falls, the villagers have complained that water has never flowed through the project’s pipes since it was implemented. This was stated by Garo Hills Youth Solidarity (GHYS) in a press release today.
“The construction of a treatment plant has been completed and taps have been distributed to every household by the concerned contractor,” GHYS leader Endick Marak said. “However, villagers have never tasted JJM water since the completion of the project in the village.”
The water tank is currently full of rainwater but the villagers, spotting an opportunity to make use of the infrastructure, have decided to use it to rear pigs. Although they have complained about the lack of water, GHYS said that at least the boundary wall built around the tank is “well-constructed” and pigs can be reared safely and soundly.
