The Border Security Force (BSF), Meghalaya today intercepted an illicit consignment of cosmetic items worth over Rs 49.5 lakhs in the Nayabazar area of East Khasi Hills District, near the India-Bangladesh border.
According to the BSF, the cosmetic products were concealed in a jungle area close to unfenced patches of the border by smugglers who intend to transport them into Bangladesh under the cover of darkness. “The comparatively lower prices of these products make them highly sought after in Bangladesh. This demand has, unfortunately, led to recurring incidents of smuggling across the border,” the statement added.
The seized items have been handed over to the customs office at Pynursla for further investigation and necessary action.
Committing to curb such illegal cross-border activities and safeguarding the nation’s interests, the BSF has urged residents of border areas to report any suspicious activities to local authorities and continue supporting efforts to maintain peace and security.
