A 54-year-old man was found dead in a ditch today in Mawrangtangwein village, West Khasi Hills.
The man, identified as Yespar Pariong, had been missing since January 27 and was reportedly an alcoholic.
Police were informed at around 12:20pm that the body had been found by passersby near the retaining wall and hillock of the Nongstoin-Wahkaji Road.
The head and upper body were buried inside the loose soil with the legs sticking out. Police extricated the top half of the body and relatives of Pariong identified him.
Although it is suspected that his death was an accident, police are investigating further to ascertain the full facts of the case. Pariong’s body was taken to the Nongstoin Civil Hospital for autopsy.
