Shillong, Aug 31: A Maruti van caught fire and was completely gutted in the blaze in the early hours of August 31 near Tirot Sing Memorial Hall in Mairang.
The incident occurred around 3 am in the parking area and was first noticed by two individuals who had spent the night in another vehicle parked at the hall.
According to Lambok Nongrang, General Secretary of Pyndengumiong village, the village leaders were immediately informed and they alerted the Fire Service Station. Firefighters arrived promptly and managed to douse the flames, preventing the fire from spreading further. Another vehicle parked nearby sustained minor damage while being moved away from the burning van.
The cause of the car fire is still unknown, with investigators considering both technical fault and arson as possible explanations. The incident is currently under investigation.
