Following opposition from the Khasi Students Union (KSU), the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) has declared April 7 a holiday.
USTM was set to host the seventh edition of the North East Graduate Congress (NEGS), which was supposed to begin on April 7 and run until April 9.
Unfortunately, this happens to fall on Holy Week this year, the most sacred week in the liturgical year in Christianity. April 7 is Good Friday and April 9 Easter.
The KSU in Ri Bhoi had raised its opposition to the decision of the university stating that holding an event during this time would offend the sentiments of the Christian community.
The USTM in a holiday notice issued today said, “Classes will be adjourned on April 8 as the university is hosting the NEGS on that day. This is also informed that participation in the event by the student is optional.”
