Cabinet minister Kyrmen Shylla has urged people to make optimum use of social media to spread awareness on the dangers of drug abuse.
Speaking at an awareness programme on drug abuse and illicit trafficking in Khliehriat today, Shylla sough the collective efforts of all stakeholders to combat the threats. He encouraged citizens particularly the youth to engage in physical activities including games and sports in the interest of their health and well being and in order to avoid drugs and other intoxicants.
Stressing on the need for strengthening collaborative efforts, Shylla impressed upon the gathering to stop discrimination and stigmatization against HIV/AIDS infected individuals of society.
The event was organised by the Red Ribbon Club (RRC), Jaintia Eastern College in collaboration with Kyrmen Foundation and Meghalaya AIDS Control Society (MACS).
Earlier, a rally which commenced from Khliehriat East Parking Lot and culminated at Khliehriat Higher Secondary School Playground was held, followed by an awareness programme on HIV/AIDS under the theme, ‘United for a Healthier Future: Combating Drug Abuse and HIV/AIDS’.
