Amid tensions between India and Pakistan, Tura MP Saleng Sangma has stressed on the urgent need to strengthen the Border Security Force (BSF) guarding the Indo-Bangladesh border.
Sangma said that strengthening the BSF should be the government’s priority, citing potential threats from Bangladesh to the North East states. He revealed that he has already alerted the Union Ministry of Home Affairs to fence the entire border.
Meghalaya shares a 443km border with Bangladesh, most of which has been fenced already, though gaps remain.
Two BSF camps are being set up in Jaintia Hills and Garo Hills, with land acquisition underway. Sangma cautioned the government against complacency, given the influx of Bangladeshis and Rohingyas into Garo Hills.
He also urged the Union Ministry of Home Affairs to fill all vacant posts in the BSF to ensure robust border security. The ministry has overall charge of the BSF, which is one of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) in the country.
