Residents of Umlaper in East Jaiñtia Hills today came out in protest against construction of a retaining wall over a village road and dismantled it.
The Amrit cement company had constructed the wall and according to the villagers this was done even after the dorbar had written to the authorities to stop work.
Chairman of Umlaper village, P. Pdang said that the dorbar had raised objection to the construction of the boundary wall since the road is used as pavement or roadway by villages to pass through to the national highway.
“We had sent a letter on April 18 but the company failed to respond to our pleas,” Pdang said.
He also reminded the company on the need to replace worn out underground electric wires connecting the village as they pose dangers to the people.
The villagers were supported by the FKJGP, East Jaiñtia Hills and the Khliehriat circle who also demanded the company to stop the work.
