The water level at the Umiam reservoir reached 3,205.75 feet today morning and residents downstream have told to be on alert as water may have to be released from the dam soon.
People downstream of the hydropower plant have been requested to “be extra cautious and are advised not to venture into rivers/streams so as to avoid any unfortunate incident and to stay away from streams, drains, culverts, etc. In case of floods, people should stay away from electric poles or power lines to avoid electrocution,” an official press release stated today.
Low water levels only a few weeks ago necessitated long hours of daily power cuts. Although reduced in duration, power cuts are still a regular occurrence.
