United Democratic Party (UDP) general secretary Jemino Mawthoh has expressed full confidence that the party will win the Sohiong seat which went to the polls today.
The Sohiong Assembly seat had its polling day deferred after UDP candidate and former MLA HDR Lyngdoh died a week before the February 27 state election.
“Besides the sympathy wave related to the late HDR Lyngdoh, who was a leader for more than three decades and served Sohiong constituency well, the charisma of the present UDP candidate, Synshar Kupar Roy Lyngdoh Thabah, is another factor,” Mawthoh told this reporter.
Another factor is the strength of the UDP at the grassroots in Sohiong and the rest of Khasi-Jaintia Hills and the effective campaigning of the UDP leaders. The main fight in the election is expected to be between the UDP and the National People’s Party, whose candidate Samlin Malngiang is the incumbent.
