The United Democratic Party (UDP) nomination committee will recommend names for the party’s top posts for its general council meeting on July 29.
When asked whether he was in the race for the president’s post, UDP working president and cabinet minister Paul Lyngdoh said on Saturday that the party’s nomination committee recommends the names for each of the different positions as the party does not have a system where the members contest.
Asked if the present set-up will continue, he said, “Let’s see what happens, what the nomination committee recommends.”
Recently, UDP general secretary Jemino Mawthoh had claimed that there is a general consensus among party leaders and workers that the incumbent president, Metbah Lyngdoh, should continue to lead the party.
Under his leadership, the UDP has risen in strength, going from six seats in the Assembly in 2018 to 12 in 2023.
