The United Democratic Party’s (UDP) district election committee for East Khasi Hills has recommended names for four seats in the upcoming Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) elections.
These names will be forwarded to the party’s state election committee for a final decision.
Among the four are Mitchell Wankhar, the sitting MDC for Laban-Mawprem, who has been recommended for the same seat.
The committee has nominated Auguster Jyrwa for Jaiaw, replacing Paul Lyngdoh, who is now a cabinet minister in the state government and MLA for West Shillong.
The other two names are former MDC James Ban Basaiawmoit (Mawkhar-Pynthorumkhrah) and Desmond KL Mawlong (Nongthymmai).
According to Sohra MDC Titosstarwell Chyne, the UDP will announce around 70 percent of its candidates by December 13 in the first list. Chyne also said that the UDP plans to contest all the seats in the KHADC and JHADC elections, though it will have an “understanding” with the allied Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) in a few.
