Just 24 hours after Speaker of the Assembly Metbah Lyngdoh said that new districts will be created under the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong tempered expectations by saying that this will only be possible if the state’s financial position allows.
Although he said that the state government’s wish is to upgrade civil subdivisions to full districts, the process involves great financial implications.
“As of now we won’t be able to say or commit to anything,” Tynsong said today.
Yesterday Lyngdoh said that he was confident that the government would be able to overcome the financial hurdles in order to upgrade Mairang civil subdivision to a district. Lyngdoh is the MLA of Mairang constituency.
He had also said that the government has “to ensure that the new districts are created at the earliest.”
