A family in Shillong are living under strenuous condition and are crying for justice after their sole breadwinner was left bed-ridden after a coal laden truck crushed his leg.
24-year-old Rohan Das of Pdengshnong in Golflink here suffered multiple fractures on his right leg after a coal-laden truck hit his bike on January 8, 2020 at Phramer in Ladrymbai under East Jaiñtia Hills district while on his way to Shillong.
While an FIR was registered and the case is being taken up by a lower court, the family lives from hand to mouth with his mother earning just enough to pay the house rent by setting up a small shop in the locality.
Rohan told Highland Post that he had dropped out from school after his father had a severe stroke and started earning for the family by engaging in setting up CCTV cameras for high profile clients in the State. “Everything was fine then. We had enough to eat and I was able to pay for my sister’s education but after the accident, my sister had to drop out from class 12 as all my savings went into getting surgeries,” he rued.
He said while the family attends to court hearings of his case, the owner of the truck, Ankit Kumar, has never made appearance thereby delaying justice. “Here we are waiting for justice day and night whereas the driver who is the cause of my disability, could earn a living and walk free,” Rohan lament.
Till date the family has spent Rs 3 lakh to get Rohan treated. He said doctors in Shillong have suggested he get his leg amputated. “Come what may I wanted to be back on my feet. So we consulted doctors in Patna and I was told I should at least get four surgeries. It needs to be done urgently, but we don’t have enough money to get it done. It’s too late already,” he sighs with despair.
