The A’chik Association for Protection of Environment (AAPE) has asked the Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department to resolve the issues that are keeping Tura short of water despite the coming of the rainy season.
In a release today, AAPE said that water shortages take a “huge toll” on the residents of Tura.
The reservoir at Edenbari was found, on inspection by Tura MDC Bernard N Marak, to have sufficient volume of water to supply the whole of the town, AAPE joint secretary Lawrence A Sangma said, adding that the real problem is an “attitude of negligence over the years” towards the water crisis by officials.
Leaks in pipes, restrictions on connections and slowness to respond to complaints has ensured that the problem has only gotten worse over the years, AAPE stated.
“The underlying problems should not be overlooked and the concerned department should do the needful at the earliest to address these issues, otherwise, the crisis would be much more severe than what we are facing now,” Sangma concluded.
