Jowai, Oct 27: The Jaintia unit of the Meghalaya Commercial Truck Owner and Drivers Association (MCTODA) has alleged that police interfered in a peaceful protest at Wahlartein on the Jowai Bypass at Khliehtyrshi.
The protest, comprising truck owners and drivers, aimed to demand transport wages for cement clinker from cement companies as per government-fixed rates.
MCTODA spokesperson Wanchwa Nongtdu said that the protest started at around 9am, with police attempting to halt trucks at 1:45pm.
He termed the police action as suppression of individual rights, adding that the promises by cement companies during public hearings to address the issues face by locals were “pure lies”.
The protest will continue until the MCTODA demands are met and the association is open to talks with cement company authorities at the protest site.
