A training programme on “Improved Cashew Cultivation practices and post harvest handling” was organised at the College of Community Science, Tura for 80 cashew growing farmers from six villages of West Garo Hills district.
ICAR-Directorate of Cashew Research Puttur Director, Dr. J. Dinakara Adiga who attended the programme as the chief guest highlighted the importance of cashew cultivation and its potentiality in popularising as major commercial crop in the Garo Hills.
He said such training programmes on cultivation practices by following appropriate horticultural, plant protection and post harvest handling approaches is the need of the hour to increase income of the small and marginal farmers.
Dean of the college, Dr. Jyoti V Vastrad spoke on the situation of cashew farming in the region and stressed on the importance of setting up of proper processing unit for cashew kernel extraction and creating awareness on alternative utilisation of cashew by-products as farmers are totally discarding fruits without making it any product.
As a part of the project activities inputs worth of 3.50 lakhs were distributed to the small and marginal farmers.
In the technical session, scientists of ICAR-Directorate of Cashew Research, Puttur delivered talks on various aspects of cashew cultivation and processing.
