The traffic police are working on certain strategies to see that there are no jams on the city’s narrow roads.
Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem said, “We have been working out certain strategies. The traffic jams happen because people overtake or people have a logjam at junctions. If we can regulate this there will be a flow. The main problem in Shillong is when there is a logjam everything gets stuck and even if this happens for two minutes, huge traffic snarls follow.”
The police department has been utilising flying squads to ensure that roads are not blocked on highways leading into the state capital, such as at Mawiong and Upper Shillong.
“I have seen that the traffic jams in the Upper Shillong areas have eased these days and have become less severe because of all the measures and we have to work out more on the junctions,” Syiem said.
Public buses are a boon and a bane in many ways – although they reduce the need for private vehicles, they clog the Khyndailad area.
“We are trying to find a solution, perhaps a different route for the buses and other public transportation systems so that already congested places like Police Bazaar are not choked further,” the SP said.
