The Joint Action Committee Nartiang Khanduli (JACNK) led by the waheh shongs has demanded immediate removal of the check gate erected by the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) in Khanduli.
The traditional heads of six villages led by the chairman of the committee, also the waheh shnong of Moodop Nartiang, Damonmi Dkhar visited Khanduli yesterday following tensions that erupted in the village, situated along the Meghalaya-Assam border.
On April 15, the forest department of the KAAC erected a signboard to set up a tax collection post at the village which was later uprooted by hundreds of angry residents.
According to the committee, Khanduli belongs to Meghalaya and collection is being carried out illegally. The waheh shnong said that tax is being collected not only from commercial vehicles but tourists and such illegality should not be allowed.
The committee also condemned the claims made by West Karbi Anglong district Deputy Commissioner Krishna Baruah that Khanduli village belongs to Assam on the basis of documents.
