The Trinamool Congress (TMC) is looking for a consensus among opposition INDIA parties for the two Meghalaya Lok Sabha seats but has staked out its claim to Tura.
TMC leader Dr Mukul Sangma today informed that the party will likely only put up a candidate for Tura. The TMC won four seats from Garo Hills in last year’s state Assembly elections but only one from Khasi Jaintia Hills.
As to who the TMC will field, Dr Sangma ruled himself out, saying he did not want to weaken the opposition in the Assembly.
Negotiations for seat-sharing among the opposition alliance (dubbed INDIA) are still incomplete but the TMC Meghalaya wants to concentrate on Tura.
“From our side, we had always maintained that we would like to fight one seat and let the other seat be fought by other parties and let there be some effort to put that collective endeavour since we share that common objective of taking on the current dispensation,” Dr Sangma said.
The TMC will likely announce its candidate for the seat either on Saturday or Monday, he added.
