Politicians in power fear that the Voice of the People Party (VPP) would clear up the “mess” that the autonomous district councils are in and that could be the reason for the delay in the election for the KHADC and JHADC, VPP president Ardent M Basaiawmoit said today.
Elections to the two ADCs were supposed to be held in February 2024 but their terms were initially extended for six months and then for another six on the pretext of delimitation of constituencies.
Basiawmoit said that the delay could be due to the fear of the VPP coming to power in the ADCs. “They don’t want the VPP to clean up the mess in the ADCs,” he claimed.
There has to be a limit to the extensions, however, as administrator’s rule would be imposed if there is still no election 12 months on, Basaiawmoit said.
