A teenage girl was electrocuted to death while two others were injured after they came into contact with a live wire at a jungle near MIDC, Umiam Block 6 in Ri Bhoi district today.
The deceased identified as 13-year old Mikkinchi Momin. Mikkinchi and the two others, Nikgrichi I Sangma (13) and Chuchang I Sangma (8), who were staying at a labour camp of the Vikas Sawmill, had gone to the jungle to pluck jackfruits.
Resident said that the 11 KV electric wire had snapped and was lying beneath the ground for the past few months.
The injured children were immediately rushed to Civil Hospital Shillong for treatment.
Alleging negligence by the MeCEL, the Khasi Students Union (KSU), Umiam unit has urged it to take note of such accidents and ensure wires are properly laid. The organisation has also demanded immediate relief for the family.
