National People’s Party (NPP) MLA for Phulbari, Abu Taher Mondal, admitted that the Congress Party saw a swing towards it in the days prior to the general election for the Tura Lok Sabha seat but there were still enough votes for the NPP’s Agatha K Sangma.
Mondal said that TMC supporters ditched their own candidate to vote for the Congress’s Saleng Sangma. Other NPP leaders have expressed concern that the support of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the NPP may have harmed Agatha’s candidacy among voters wary of the Hindu nationalist BJP.
Agatha, the incumbent, will still win the election, Mondal, a former Congressman, predicted.
“Our candidate is winning in the Tura seat. We always believe that the margin should be big but even if you win by one vote, that is still winning,” he said.
The results will be declared on June 4 along with the rest of the country.
