Cabinet minister and Khliehriat MLA Kyrmen Shylla has responded to the growing demand for Jowai to be declared the summer capital of Meghalaya, stating that while the proposal is welcome, its implementation would require significant resources.
With a demand for Tura to be the state’s ‘Winter Capital’ seemingly gathering steam, a corresponding request has been made for Jowai.
Shylla said that declaring a summer or winter capital involves huge expenditure and manpower and cannot be done overnight. He added that the government will assess the feasibility of the proposal in due course.
The Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU) had made the call for a summer capital in Jowai, following the state government’s decision to constitute an all-party committee to examine the proposal of setting up a winter capital in Tura.
“If it is within our capacity, we will make it happen. But it is not possible in one go. Time will come for that,” Shylla said.
