Several students who excelled in sports and academics were felicitated on the occasion of Children’s Day by the office of the District Hub for Empowerment of Women (DHEW), Jowai in collaboration with the District School Education Officer.
The celebration was held yesterday at the District Library Mynthong in Jowai under ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ with the message “The Children of today will make the India of Tomorrow”.
Among those who were felicitated were students from North Liberty Higher Secondary School, Jowai, St Mary Mazzarello Girl’s Higher Secondary School, Government Boys Higher Secondary School, Jowai Presbyterian Higher Secondary School, KJP Presbyterian Synod Mihngi Higher Secondary School, Shangpung Presbyterian Higher Secondary School, and St. Dominic’s Higher Secondary School, Mawkyndeng.
Jowai MLA and Chairman of Meghalaya Urban Development Authority Wailadmiki Shylla was the chief guest.
Addressing the students, Shylla emphasised on the importance of education, hard work and determination and encouraged the students to dream big and believe in themselves. HE spoke on the theme and stressed the importance of education for every child particularly for young girls.
Shylla urged the students to make use of the opportunity they have and stay focused and strive to set an example for others. He also extends his best wishes to all students appearing for the upcoming exams.
Additional Deputy Commissioner B. Blah spoke on the significance of Children’s Day celebrated on November 14 in honour of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, India first Prime Minister. She said Nehru’s vision for children emphasised the need for love, respect and opportunities for all.
She highlighted that the day is a reminder to society to focus on the rights and wellbeing of children. She stressed the importance of ensuring equal opportunities in education, career growth and development particularly for girls and marginalised children to create a brighter future for the nation.
