Stones and boulders from the Mynkrem River, in West Jaiñtia Hills district, are allegedly being collected illegally for construction of the Jowai bypass, Khooid Ya ka Wah Myntdu (KYM) has said.
The organisation said during its inspection along the river, it was found that soil was also extracted to lay the road and blamed the EE PWD (Roads) Jowai Central division for violating the orders of the district magistrate and the district council against such activities.
The KYM said the office is killing the people and aquatic lives in the river that are directly dependent on the cleanliness of the river to survive and urged the district administration, forest, district council and the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board, Shillong, to take stern action against the office.
The inspection was carried out in the presence of additional deputy commissioner, B. Blah executive engineer (PWD Roads), H. Nengnong, JHADC CFO H. Passah and KYM president Khroo L Pariat, among others.
