The state government is intending to introduce a bus service akin to the one that it created for school students (Sustainable Transport and Efficient Mobility Society or STEMS) but for its own employees.
This is as per a letter dated today, signed by D Synrem, Special Officer and ex-officio Deputy Secretary Planning, Investment Promotion and Sustainable Development Department.
According to the letter, Synrem said that the state government intends to create an enabling framework to enhance mobility in an entrepreneurial mode/through private participation for which a study was conducted.
The study revealed that work trips and educational trips are the major contributors to traffic congestion in the city, he also said.
“Therefore, with the aim of taking steps towards decongesting Shillong, shared commuter services for students have been operationalised and, as a next step, it is proposed to initiate shared commuter service for government employees in Shillong city,” Synrem said.
A travel pattern survey of government employees is being conducted in order to enable proper planning of the service.
